Environmental Defense is creating a new high level position, Senior Director of Interactive Marketing and Membership, within its Marketing and Communications division. This position will be the senior marketing strategist and senior manager of multiple teams that oversee Environmental Defense’s web operations, web marketing, online fundraising and direct mail fundraising programs.
Leadership at this level requires demonstrated depth of direct marketing via mail and online channels, strong team building and management skills, the capacity to work with multiple internal stakeholders to market Environmental Defense’s programs and brand into compelling initiatives to attract and grow support for key program initiatives and revenue for the organization.
The Senior Director will report into the Vice President for Marketing and Communications and will supervise a staff in both our Washington, DC and New York offices. Ideally, this position will be staffed in Washington, DC.
Responsibilities:
- Ensure that all online and mail campaigns reflect and advance the goals of Environmental Defense’s organization-wide marketing, branding and communication strategies
- Evaluate current and advance new approaches of online marketing strategies to recruit, retain, and upgrade interest and support for Environmental Defense’s mission and programs
- Participate in and approve all creative development for online and mail efforts and ensure that they are on strategy and accurately reflect the organization’s program and mission goals
- Work with our online Action Network and Membership Directors to establish annual membership and fundraising goals and operational budgets
- Analyze online and direct mail campaign performances and report results for senior management review
- Work with web team to create and manage a process to set daily and weekly home page priorities and to keep high traffic pages relevant and current
- Lead strategic development with online teams to build traffic, recruit new donors and activists through online media, search engine optimization, keyword marketing, reciprocal linking and other tactics and engagement methods
- Maintain productive and integrated working relationships with both the Program and Brand Marketing teams ensuring good information sharing and collaborative program planning
- Manage and motivate a strong, committed staff of 15 including four current direct reports
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business Administration or related field
- A minimum of a ten year track record managing a major direct marketing program in a comparable organization
- Demonstrated depth of understanding of web design, web engagement marketing and online fundraising and development tools
- Keen strategic marketing insight to identify and position issues/programs to develop compelling creative work and marketing initiatives with proven results
- Sharp analytic abilities to assess individual campaigns as well as success of overall web and direct mail programs and to identify, new productive markets, file segments and new outreach tactics
- Exceptional level of organizational skills and ability to juggle multiple tasks
- Demonstrated success in team building, problem solving and staff motivation
- Successful experience with senior management and outside consultants to craft marketing strategies and to translate strategy into effective operations and performance
- Experience in building and managing large, active and complex budgets
- Experience managing cross functional, geographically diverse teams
- Demonstrated experience managing and developing staff
