Underwriter IPrimary Responsibilities Include:

  • Reviewing, examining and underwriting loans to ensure soundness, business value and compliance with Countrywide and Investor standards
  • Assessing loan attributes and documentation for soundness and accuracy
  • Reviewing, evaluating and synthesizing data to ascertain loan viability and identify risk issues and potential fraud
  • Evaluating debt ratio, loan-to-value ratios, credit score, property valuation and various other factors
  • Determining and documenting loan conditions and communicating requirements and/or decisions
  • Providing input on new and/or existing Underwriting processes, procedures and/or approaches
  • Independently conducting full and comprehensive evaluations of a variety of complex Mortgage-Loan Applications
  • Applying specialized knowledge in the interpretation of applicable internal and regulatory Underwriting guidelines
  • Assessing all variables and determining conditions for loan approvals or denials
  • Making final Underwriting decisions
  • Identifying and recommending alternative financing solutions
  • Exercising authority to make Underwriting exceptions, deviations and adjustments (as appropriate)
  • Educating Brokers and Bankers regarding a variety of Countrywide products, programs and loan/pricing alternatives
  • Providing Underwriting guidance and expertise to less-experienced personnel
  • Interpreting and adapting departmental protocol and determining optimal courses-of-action based on consideration of various alternatives
  • Exercising discretion and independent judgment on matters that have a significant financial impact

A Successful Candidate Will Have:

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent
  • 3+ years of Underwriting experience
  • Multiple Underwriting designations-including Government designations
  • Subject-matter expertise in an Underwriting specialization and partial expertise in a second Underwriting-specialization
  • Extensive understanding of Countrywide’s Processing, Underwriting and Closing procedures
  • Extensive understanding of Underwriting systems and their interdependencies
  • Extensive knowledge of a variety of loan products and program guidelines
  • Advanced computer-skills
  • Advanced customer-interface skills
  • Strong analytical, interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills

The Ideal Candidate May Also Possess:

  • Bachelor’s (or equivalent) degree and/or equivalent experience
